Patients First exists at the interface between clinical delivery and effective information to enable better care - "better health through better systems".
Patients First is a not-for-profit charitable company whose shareholders are General Practice New Zealand (GPNZ) and the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP). It began as a national programme of work to deliver information technology to primary care including a role as the primary care delivery vehicle for the National Health IT Plan. It has been in existence for six years including being three years into its current incarnation as a company. In that time it has built up a good reputation for delivery of strategy, tools and facilitation within and between primary and secondary care. Patients First has held and currently holds national contracts that place it as a key part of some exciting national and regional initiatives. The role traverses standards, delivery, strategy and acts as a broker between national and local levels.
Some of our previous successes include: GP2GP, The NZ Practice Management System Review, Review of clinical pathways, development of the Health Quality Measures NZ framework and repository, development of the toolkit for structured data transfer used in GP2GP, NZePrescription Service and other national projects, U13 Fee Changes for PMSs, working with MoH and the Sector on a new Integrated Performance and Incentive Framework set of measures
Some of our current focus areas include: NES, GP2GP version 2, Discharge, a common data dictionary, primary care quality measures and framework, assisting with the roll-out of the NZePrescription Service, working with primary care networks to drive the adoption of a common interface specification for primary care vendors. Patients First operates with a small and agile team, drawing together expert groups and sector input when and where required to achieve results. It has a small Board who include well respected national leaders in the health sector that are complemented by a multiple disciplinary steering committee of senior health leaders from the sector.
